WOW! and GEM College

The WOW! Institute has been established by GEM College of International Business (RTO 0366), incorporated in 1992, as Workright Australia. GEM College rightly boasts “Global Resources: Local Focus”. We have significant, world-leading resources at our disposal – but we insist on our clients being able to customise those resources, to take on a Local Focus.

Over the last 3 decades GEM College has consistently proven itself to be an innovative educator (see gemcollege.edu.au/educational-innovator). The WOW! Institute is equally innovative – and is being launched across Australia and beyond, in readiness for the 2024 academic year and beyond. WOW! is designed specifically to introduce young people to the “World of Work” and the “World of Wellness”. We aim to address the doubts about the future, and the fears about the uncertainties of the world, by providing positive input, that will change perspectives and bring excitement and enthusiasm to young lives.

World of Wellness

Over 30 individual short courses underpinning the World of Wellness can be selected by individual students or Teachers as required.

Importantly, we also offer a suite of workshops packaged in sequential order to fit the cultural context of the school community for staff, students, and volunteers.

Establishing a World of Wellness School Community

The WOW! Institute is led by Dr Luceille Outhred (GEM College’s Resources Manager) in conjunction with Digitally ConnectED’s Wellbeing Consultant and Registered Counsellor, Ms Denielle Pitcher.

This package has been jointly designed with a sharp focus based on educational courses which meet the specific needs of young people and the provision of professional tools to equip school personnel, to enable students to experience the World of Wellness.

Our aim and objectives are to equip and empower school communities to share one vision; a healthy workplace of empowered individuals working together as a community; tailored to fit within the school’s mission statement.

  • Relationships and Interpersonal Skills
  • Self-Management
  • Workplace Wellness

supplemented by mentoring/support. Peer mentoring to teaching and ancilliary staff will also be facilitated. Mentoring enables multiplication.

Any personal assessments utilised, eg personality testing backed by evidence and widely used in mental health/industry sectors. Theoretical frameworks of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy have been integrated – as well as educational theorists underpinnings.

Teacher Training Requirements – teachers will have access to Learning Guides to implement the WOW! program if the option to co-brand is adopted. In addition, an industry expert will be available to assist in establishing the WOW! Online Campus infrastructure, and assist in any contextualisation or customisation required by the school or an individual staff member.

Denielle has been appointed as the WOW! Wellness Co-ordinator. As a professionally qualified counsellor she will introduce the World of Wellness School Community program, and, in conjunction with each school’s personnel, will assist in creating a World of Wellness School Community. Denielle has considerable professional learning and practical experience in counselling in both school and work environments!

Programs are available either as:

  • External Provider led face-to-face sessions with all resources provided and follow-up as required AND/OR External Provider led (webinar) supported by all resources provided on line and follow-up as required.
  • Schools have the option of co-branding as a licensed WOW! Provider meaning access to all courses can be delivered at each school’s discretion – and materials customised for the specific local needs. This means an online campus is established in the school’s name, where content can be delivered to all students, staff and volunteers.
  • Print-based Learning Guides support the teacher with face-to-face delivery – while Learners can learn from any screen, any time and from any location.

Ongoing support offered either in person, or online, is as little or as much as the school needs to ensure the effective implementation of its program. This support is of a consultancy, peer/team approach, as the school community is the expert in its local world. Monthly follow-up for three months in a mentor capacity is integral to successfully implementing the program to ensure any gaps are addressed and administrators are supported with resources. An initial assessment is followed up with a final evaluation at the three-month mark to identify areas of growth and those requiring more intensive work.

Participant feedback forms are collated to evaluate the program’s success. Facilitate the use of a range of psychometrically validated measurement tools which exist with associated methodologies for implementation at the school’s discretion (AITSL, 2022).
